Abstract
Somatic embryo plantlets were regenerated from in vitro-cultured shoots in Hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa Sieb. et Zucc). The in vitro cultured shoots originally induced from seedlings collected from natural forest. Natural abscisic acid (ABA) was better for somatic embryo maturation than commercially available synthetic ABA. In general, somatic embryogenesis and plant regeneration achieved was at a low rate.

Key words: conifer, abscisic acid, somatic embryo, maturation, germination.
